CHAPTER 11

Translation

--A transformation takes takes place when all points in a plane are moved in the same direction through a same distance.

--The object and the image have the same shape, size and orientation.  

EXAMPLE OF TRANSLATION

Reflection

--A transformation takes takes place when all points in a plane are flipped over in the same plane in a line known as the axis of reflection.

--The object and the image have the same shape and size but are laterally inverted

EXAMPLE OF REFLECTION

Rotation

--A transformation which takes takes place when all points in a plane are rotated about a point in the same direction through a same angle 

--The object and the image have the same shape, orientation and size.

1) In diagram above, triangle N is the image of triangle M under a translation. What is the translation?

 

2) Under a translation, the point T(6, 3) maps onto the point T’(–2, 4). State the coordinates of the image of point S(2, –4) under the same translation.

3) Diagram above shows polygon PQRS drawn on a grid of equal squares. On the diagram, draw polygon P‘Q’R'S’, the image of polygon PQRS under a 90° anticlockwise rotation about the point A.
